MOUSES|HOW
TO CLEAN YOUR MOUSE- SPRING CLEANING, COMPUTER STYLE
Mouses|How
to clean your mouse- Are we feeling sprung (as in Spring Cleaning)
yet?
Previously
we discussed the fix for the fix for Disorganized
Filing Systems in Spring Cleaning or Spring Training, Computer Style. Today
we will address the fix for the Rebellious, the Hesitant and the Herky
Jerky Mouse. In other words we're going to show you how to clean
a mouse on your computer.
By the way,
the correct plural of mouse is mice, not "mouses" as
some have insisted.
MOUSES|HOW
TO CLEAN YOUR MOUSE- THE REBELLIOUS, THE HESITANT AND THE HERKY JERKY
MOUSE
“Hey, what’s the matter with this
stupid mouse? Sometimes the cursor/pointer moves smoothly, sometimes
it doesn’t want to move at all. It jerks all over the page. I
move right it goes left. Maybe I need a new mouse. Maybe it’s
hungry. Should I feed my mouse some cheese (grin)?”
Well, maybe
not. Maybe all you need is Spring Cleaning, Computer Style. Let’s
fix this problem now and show you how to clean your mouse.
WINDOWS
AND MACINTOSH
It is likely
that your mouse is just dirty. That’s right, dirty. (These
tips apply to non-optical mice. If you have an optical mouse then
contact me for ways to correct its rebellious ways and how to clean
an optical mouse. )
Conventional/traditional mice have the ball
on the bottom. You navigate by moving the mouse (and thereby the
underlying ball) on your mouse pad or other flat surface. Trackball
mice have the ball on the top of the mouse and the cursor/pointer is
moved with your thumb, while the mouse remains stationary.
In both cases dirt and dust collects on the
wheels, rollers, ruby bearings or sensing windows inside the ball-cage. This
is true of both cordless and corded mice (for cordless mice also change
the batteries, check the maximum distance and the line-of-sight between
the mouse and the receiver).
The how
to clean your mouse procedures are a little different for each mouse
type. Please go to the manufacturer’s web site (for example
Logitech is www.logitech.com) or the mouse documentation for step-by-step
procedures.
Laptop owners with a Touchpad should check and
adjust the software sensitivity settings. Clean the Touchpad’s
surface as directed by the manufacturer.
Mouse all
cleaned and fed now? Notice how smooth its operation has become? Good.
Now, don't
forget to clean the mouse pad or mouse mat on whatever surface
you are using with the mouse. Failure to do that will make it a herky
jerky, rebellious mouse again soon.
If you are
still having difficulties, then clean again. If the problem persists
then there may be a mechanical defect in the mouse mechanism, cable
or it is a software issue. Contact the manufacturer for assistance. However,
I usually just buy a new mouse at this point. For $10 to $70.00
it is not worth the hassle.
That’s
it for today. Next time we’ll continue Spring Cleaning, Computer
Style and discuss the fix for THE
KILLER FLOPPY DRIVE.
